Joomla 1.7 now has it's feet well and truly under the table, and many third party plug-in developers have caught up with the latest version.

However, with Joomla 2.5 due in a matter of weeks according to the Joomla community blog, many users are still running Joomla 1.5, support for which is expected to end later in 2012.

Running the latest version of any software application is advisable in order to reduce the risk of security breaches.

Like many software developers, the Joomla community releases regular service patches as exploits are discovered, however once support is discontinued, it can leave a website open to hacking.

If you are running Joomla 1.5, in order to upgrade, it will be necessary to modify your template to make it compatible with current versions.

However, beforehand it's advisable to carry out an audit of your installed third party plug-in's to identify how many are compatible with the Joomla version you wish to upgrade to. If some are still awaiting an update, you can contact the developer to find out when they expect to release a compatible version, or seek an alternative that is compatible.

If all looks good to go, have your template modified for the version you are upgrading to, and then go ahead and upgrade.
